In advance of the launch of Accrington Town Square Markets in January 2024, preparations for the delivery of the bespoke-made cabins is set to begin.

Throughout December people will see the new market offer take shape, with the installation of more than 20 high-end custom units to be installed infront of Accrington’s Market Hall and Town Hall.

Following Hyndburn Council’s successful bid to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, Market traders will be re-located whilst the transformational works inside Accrington Market Hall commence, with plans on track for full completion and re-opening in April 2025.

Accrington’s Market Hall transformation will retain the existing retail trader space but will include an improved food, drink and new play/leisure offering. The search for an experienced multi-offer operator to take the reigns after the £11million transformation and building works are completed is underway and will be concluded by the end of January 2024.

Following a recent site visit, traders are extremely happy to have been given the opportunity to co-design and see their personalised new cabins in production. Traders who have chosen to establish new locations within vacant shops on Broadway, in Accrington Arndale Centre and in the Victorian Arcade will also be supported by the Council throughout their move.

Sameena King, Accrington Market Hall Manager, Said:

“It is such an exciting time and not only are we now looking forward to the Market Hall’s wider transformation, the market traders are really looking forward to their temporary Market on the Square which will launch in the new year.

“A small number of our existing businesses have made the decision to close when the works begin, and we wish them all the best for the future. Customers have been asking if they will still be able to still buy certain products from Accrington Market in the future given these closures.

“I am very pleased to share that not only will there be over 20 Accrington Market businesses available for shopping with on the Square and beyond, we have already had enquiries from providers who want to meet this customer demand, to make sure the products people love to purchase will be available throughout the transformation process.

“I am really reassured by all the community support traders have received recently, local people want independent businesses to thrive and the visibility of their new locations in these cabins will hopefully encourage people to shop small and locally even more than they are already doing.”

Accrington Market Hall will be open as usual for shoppers and diners to enjoy until the 31 December, however access across the square may be impacted at times due to the new temporary cabins being erected. To facilitate safe building of the temporary market and erection of scaffolding to the Market Hall, Burtons Chambers and Market Chambers, the festoon lights are required to be removed and again access through the square may be limited for short periods of time during December when this takes place.

Goods and services confirmed to be located on Accrington Town Square in the new year include:

Fresh Fish, Fruit & Veg, Cheese & Wine, Bakery, Electronic accessories, Eggs, Home Décor, Hairdresser, Cold meats, Tattoo Artist, Ladies wear, hosiery, Toys, biscuits & sweets and many more.

Full plans and information about the new locations for Market Traders will be highly visible on signs in Accrington Town Centre, available online at www.accringtontownsquare.com and shared on social media ahead of the launch in January 2024.
