Following the consultation earlier this autumn planning applications required to deliver the Accrington Town Square redevelopment projects are being submitted. The Accrington Town Square scheme involves refurbishment of Burtons Chambers, Market Hall, and Market Chambers.
The planning and listed building applications submitted can be found by visiting Hyndburn Council’s Planning Application Search website. and inputting the application references below:
Burton chambers – Reference: 11/23/0457
Accrington’s Burton Chambers is proposed to be repurposed to create a modern co-working space, featuring a dedicated events area. Work to convert the empty commercial units into offices is permitted without planning permission, however plans have been lodged for external refurbishment to the building’s façade to support the redevelopment. This refurbishment would include the replacement of the existing shop fronts and the creation of a ground-floor entrance to the chambers.
Market Chambers – Reference: 11/23/0418
Change of use of the building to provide a new cultural and community facility alongside external alterations, repairs to the building facade, and a third floor localised roof extension.
Market Hall Temporary Market – reference 11/23/0430
The grade-two listed Victorian complex is set to be transformed into a food and drink venue under the transformational plans for Accrington Town Square. Plans to install temporary market stalls for traders to operate from during the construction phase will be deliberated at a planning committee meeting next Wednesday (6 December 2023).
The planning application documents include a document called a Planning Statement. The Planning Statement for each of the applications provides a summary of the applications, including the feedback received, and how it has been considered by the team.
The renovation and repurposing of these buildings are set to support the town centre’s plans for regeneration and investment in Accrington’s town centre. The initiatives will boost footfall, provide support to existing businesses, and attract a diverse array of new enterprises and activities, thereby breathing new life into the town.
The feedback from the planning consultation was shared with the project team. The Planning Statement for each of the planning applications has a summary of the feedback received, and how it has been considered by the team.
