Following Hyndburn’s successful bid to the government’s levelling up fund Hyndburn Borough Council are set to acquire the historic Market Chambers building, opposite Accrington Market Hall.
The funding for acquiring the building was secured on the basis of transforming the currently under-used building into a vibrant cultural and heritage venue as part of the Town Centre Investment Plan, launched in 2022.
This facility will strive to reflect the elements of local heritage that are the most important to the borough’s community, whilst attracting new visitors to the area.
Hyndburn Borough Council are pleased to announce that they have launched a public consultation for the newly proposed cultural and heritage space within the Market Chambers building (across from Accrington Market), and are appealing to all residents to get involved in the process.
The online survey is open until 12 June 2023 and can be found here.
Cllr Mohammed Younis, Portfolio holder for Levelling up, said:
“The building is secured for a culture and heritage venue, but what has not yet been determined is what activities or provision will be inside the building. We need the thoughts and input from our local community to make sure what is created is a space they will use and enjoy.
“Hyndburn Council and partners have already undertaken many workshops with schools and community groups to ask their thoughts and a representative poll has taken place. In addition to this we are inviting everyone to fill out the online survey to let us know what they want to see inside this important building in the heart of Accrington.”
Results from the workshops, poll and survey will help to shape future bids for funding and investment.
Cllr Marlene Haworth, Leader of Hyndburn Council, said:
“Hyndburn has so much rich heritage embedded throughout the borough and we want to really uplift this proud background for all to enjoy. By creating a dedicated space to explore these historical and cultural narratives, we can better celebrate our borough whilst generating footfall into the area that supports the growth of the local economy.
“It is important that residents make the most of this opportunity to be involved in shaping a process that will directly impact their local area, helping Hyndburn Council to build upon our past for a prosperous future.”
The online survey is open until 12 June 2023 and can be found here.
