Roy Duckworth is a site manager working for Morgan Sindall on the Accrington Town Square projects. Born and bred in Accrington, Roy has worked for Morgan Sindall since 2003 and is proud to be based in his hometown for his latest project.
We caught up with him to ask him some questions:
Tell us about your role
I’m a site manager so that involves managing sub-contractors onsite, undertaking site inductions, coordinating works and general management and coordination of the site. My key aim in everything I do is to keep everyone safe, both the workforce and the general public.
How did you get into this career?
I’ve worked for Morgan Sindall since 2003 when it was previously known as Amec. I started day release from school attending Accrington College doing bricklaying and then started at a local construction company before I was given the opportunity in 2003 to attend the National Construction College in Norfolk. I have been with the company ever since.
What is your connection to Accrington?
I’m Accrington born and bred and attended St John with St Augustine School, Accrington Moorhead High School, and Accrington & Rossendale College. My three children also went to St John with St Augustine School. I was married at the church attached to the school, and my children were christened there too. I once lived in the flats in the Market Chambers building, so I’m really looking forward to work beginning there for a trip down memory lane!
Have you enjoyed working in your local community?
I am very proud to be working within my hometown and even had the opportunity recently to return to my old school to read the company’s new educational book ‘Sitka Spruce, the Amazing Timber Tree’ to its pupils.
The children enjoyed the book and had a lot of questions at the end, from “What other trees can be used for construction?” to “How do you make bricks?”. They also had a lot of questions regarding the works to the Market Hall, so the activity went well to promote an interest in the project and maybe even future construction careers.
My family and friends know I work for Morgan Sindall and I often tell them about the jobs we are doing. It’s great to be able to show them something within our town centre. Creating a new Market Hall for the whole town to enjoy is a good feeling too, as I know what a positive impact it will have.
Cllr Noordad Aziz, Portfolio Holder for Transformation, Education and Skills, said:
“It is a real pleasure to see Roy, born and bred in the borough, come back to work in Accrington on the ongoing Town Square projects. Roy’s enthusiasm for getting involved with the projects through his work has been infectious and it is fantastic to hear about even our youngest generation taking an interest in the future of their town!”
