The Accrington Town Square projects are taking a significant step forward as the design team build on the extensive feedback provided on the schemes to date to prepare the planning applications for each of the three projects.

These applications will provide the information the Local Planning Authority needs to consider the applications for the projects, which include:

Market Hall

The Victorian Market Hall will be refurbished and transformed into a vibrant food and drink destination, welcoming people from across the country. While the works take place a temporary market will be established on Accrington Town Square, ensuring business and customers can continue to benefit from the market during the works.

Burtons Chambers

The building opposite Accrington Town Hall will be restored to become a modern co-working space for individuals and businesses, with events space.

Market Chambers

The building opposite the Market Hall will be refurbished and repaired, aiming to enable its transformation into a cultural, arts and heritage venue for the future.

The three projects are possible following a successful bid from Hyndburn Borough Council for £20million from round 2 of The UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

Community Feedback

As part of the process of preparing for the planning submission there will be opportunity for people to submit their thoughts, to build on feedback that has already been provided over the history of the project, and provide community members and stakeholders a further opportunity to gain insight into the upcoming plans.

Plans for the projects will be shared both online, and on display in the Market Hall. There will also be an in-person drop-in event to provide an opportunity for engagement with the teams directly involved in the design, planning, and construction phases of these transformative projects. It will provide a chance for the community to interact with key decision-makers to better understand the scope and vision of the developments.

Drop-in Event

Date: Tuesday, 3rd October

Time: 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Location: Accrington Market Hall

We are committed to enhancing the community’s well-being during the project’s lifespan, and beyond. Details about our plans to add social value and support the community will be shared throughout the transformation. We invite community members and groups to reach out if they have ideas related to social value opportunities in Accrington.

Cllr Mohammed Younis, Portfolio Holder for Levelling Up at Hyndburn Borough Council, said:

“These projects have only got to the stage they have because of the input and engagement received from the Hyndburn community.  It is ideas and support from local people that has enabled us to secure the funding for the schemes and we know that continuing to involve residents in the decision-making process is paramount to the success of this project.

“We are excited to share our plans, listen to the community’s ideas, and work together to create a vibrant and thriving town centre. I would like to encourage everyone to get involved. If you cannot attend the in-person opportunities, please take part online. It is important we hear from as many people as possible.”
